第一关，标准化考试 

所谓标准化考试，就是指托福、SAT考试。托福考试过关后，接着就是冲击“美国高考”——SAT。中国大陆并没有官方的SAT考点，因此香港自然成为众多学子的第一选择，我加入了赴港考试的大军。随着本科出国潮的愈演愈烈，香港的SAT考点场场爆满。近年来，澳门、新加坡乃至泰国都成为中国学生报考SAT的目标。其实，中国大陆也有“秘密”SAT考点的，这些考点分布在各大城市的国际学校中，但只有国际学校本校的学生才能在这些考点参加考试。 

SAT考试分为SAT I和SAT II。SAT 
II通常是学生自由选考一些自己感兴趣且擅长的科目，因此大多数中国学生都选数理化，相对中国的数理化试题来说，难度不大。最具挑战的是对英语专业词汇的熟练掌握，尤其是化学，稍不小心就有可能与满分失之交臂。SAT 
I分为阅读、数学、写作三部分。单词是一切的基础，绝不能怠慢，这是做好阅读题的保证。写作部分中的语法在高分段是“一题值万金”，它几乎都是改错题，重在总结。备考时只要把各种题中的错误分门别类记录下来，就能练出一双“鹰眼”，考试中瞬间揪出要找的错误。与要磨砺万千的英语相比，SAT 
I中的数学是名副其实的“小菜”，让中国学生大长自信。 

第二关，申请程序 

突破SAT考试后，我就着手准备申请耶鲁大学了。需要准备的材料很多，总结起来不外乎是：各种表格、申请文章、学校成绩单、SAT和托福考试成绩单、老师推荐信、正式出版物或个人获奖证书、学术论文复印件等。申请文章很重要，因为一来它能使招生委员会了解你的写作水平，二来可以通过文字向招生委员会展现一个鲜活的你。 

当时，我给耶鲁大学寄去了填写完的各种表格、申请文章……当然还包括厚厚一摞竞赛奖状、证书及获奖论文复印件。我还把我在《课堂内外》高中版发表的有关我参加美国Hotchkiss中学暑假科研活动的文章扫描后，用电子邮件发了过去。几天后，我收到了耶鲁的回复，告知已收到我的电子邮件。这是耶鲁方面第一次给我发Email，我不免心中窃喜：大概有戏了！ 

第三关，面试 

2006年11月中旬，面试通知飘然而至。我的面试官是一位耶鲁本科毕业生，麻省理工学院的在读研究生，在中国地质大学当外教。他平和随意但又不失犀利、严谨，青春而又不失沉稳、睿智。 

面试在离地质大学不远的一家小咖啡馆中进行。三个多小时的面试，似乎我答的每一句话都能给面试官继续“发挥”的空间，例如，“你父亲是做什么的？”“做物理研究的”“噢，物理，哪个领域？”“场论、凝聚态”。于是，弦、Witten、量子霍尔效应、Dan 
Tsui……一个个物理问题和大师在我们之间谈论着，最后可爱的面试官竟然开始试图给我讲物理了。另外，中国教育和科研的现状、高考、我读过的小说、我做的几篇论文的主要内容，都成了面试的话题。所以，面试很难准备，重在平时积累。 

过完这三关，就该静候佳音了。2006年12月15日，耶鲁通知书悄然而至，早上起来敲信箱账号,妈妈开玩笑地说：“只要看到 
‘congratulations’ 
就万事大吉了！”熟悉的页面蹦了出来，“congratulations，Annie”赫然在目。就这样，我成功地被耶鲁录取了。 

路径解读 

2008年到来，有留学打算的同学，要开始为2009年的申请做准备了。欧洲院校的申请周期分为两类，一类是每年8、9月份入学的，要在入学前一年的下半年申请，申请截止时间为入学当年的4、5月份；另一类是每年1月入学的，申请时间从入学前一年的年初持续到9月。 

美国大多数大学都以12月31日或1月1日作为递交正常申请的截止日期，但出于人性化考虑，有些学校允许申请人挑选一所自己最心仪的院校提前申请。提前申请的截止日期通常为11月1日，申请人在12月15日就可得知结果。若没被录取，申请人可另起炉灶，赶在12月31日前向其他大学提交正常申请。时间充裕者，通常在9、10月份就准备好了所有申请材料，这样才不至于手忙脚乱。
